Growing Like a Hibiscus: Why Becoming an Insurance-Credentialed Provider Takes Time

🌺🌺 When people see a beautiful hibiscus flower in full bloom, they often admire its vibrant colors and striking beauty. What they don’t see is the time, patience, and care required before that flower ever opens its petals to the sun.

In many ways, starting a private speech therapy practice is much like growing a hibiscus.

The bloom is what everyone notices—the therapy sessions, the progress made by clients, the relationships built with families, and the services available to the community. But before any of that can happen, there is an unseen season of preparation.

As the owner of Angela Ruiz SLP Services, I have a vision of providing accessible, high-quality speech-language pathology services to individuals and families throughout our community. I want to meet the needs of children and adults who deserve compassionate, evidence-based care close to home.

One of the most important steps in making that vision a reality is becoming credentialed with insurance companies.

Many people are surprised to learn that providers cannot simply decide to accept insurance and begin seeing clients the next day. Insurance credentialing is a lengthy process that involves extensive paperwork, verification of licenses and certifications, background reviews, professional references, malpractice insurance verification, enrollment with Medicare and Medicaid programs, and approval from each individual insurance company.

Each insurance company has its own requirements, application process, review timeline, and approval procedures. Some applications may take several months before a provider is fully approved and able to participate in the network.

Behind the scenes, countless hours are spent completing forms, uploading documentation, responding to requests for additional information, tracking applications, and following up with insurance representatives. It can sometimes feel like nurturing a plant before any signs of growth appear.

Just as a hibiscus requires sunlight, water, fertile soil, and patience, a new healthcare practice requires dedication, persistence, and faith in the process.

There are days when progress feels slow. There are moments when another form, another phone call, or another waiting period can feel discouraging. Yet every step is helping build a strong foundation that will ultimately allow more families to access care through their insurance benefits.

My commitment remains unchanged: to create a practice that serves our community well and expands access to speech therapy services for those who need them.

While I continue navigating the credentialing process, I am grateful for the support, encouragement, and trust shown by clients, families, colleagues, and community members. Your patience during this growth phase means more than you know.

The hibiscus does not bloom overnight.

But when it blooms, its beauty reflects all the unseen work that came before.

In the same way, every application completed, every document submitted, and every obstacle overcome is helping Angela Ruiz SLP Services grow into the practice I envision—a practice rooted in service, accessibility, and excellence.

Thank you for being part of this journey. I look forward to continuing to grow, bloom, and serve our community for years to come. 🌺

With gratitude,

Angela Ruiz, MS, CCC-SLP
