Parkinson’s IQ+ You Houston

June 8, 2024:

Today was an amazing day. A completely fulfilling experience for me professionally and personally. As a Speech-Language Pathologist, we are typically in an office, in a patient's room or in a client’s home. This day was a bit of a change from the norm as it was in the most exciting and beautiful part of our wonderful city of Houston.

The Michael J Fox Foundation invited me to speak as an expert on their panel for the Parkinson’s IQ + You in Houston. The panel spoke during our segment called “Building Your Parkinson's Care Team” . “Panelists discuss the importance of seeing a movement disorder specialist and building a care team of other providers.” The panel consisted of a woman living with PD, her care partner/husband, a Movement Disorder Specialist, a physical therapist, the executive director of an area PD group and me, an SLP. I was excited, I was nervous and I was completely humbled by the invitation. The panel I was a part of discussed the roles we as individual members of the team play. I was really surprised at how many people really didn’t know about the importance of having a speech pathologist on their team.

Information sessions like this one are so important for the person living with Parkinson’s Disease. We discussed risk factor, early signs of the disease, care partners and the possible questions a person newly diagnosed with Parkinson's might have. Much of the questions were directed to the movement disorder specialist and medications however the topics which were least known to the newly diagnosed are the ones SLP's help with.

If you would like to know more about Parkinson's Disease please reach out to us here at Steadily Achieving More Therapy Services or one of the local PD organizations. Below we have listed a few.
